From the Book:PrefaceThe excitement surrounding the mobile wireless communications industry is palpable and well deserved. At its bedrock, the industry rests on the three fundamental growth drivers of the U.S. economydigitalization, the speed and power of information processing, and mobility. The mobile wireless communications industry is extremely large and has experienced tremendous growth, with new capabilities being developed and brought to market on an almost daily basis. This growth should be expected to continue for the foreseeable future.The increase in personal capability enabled by being in constant, untethered communication, as well as having access to virtually any piece of data, from almost anywhere, is unparalleled. Personal capability will continue to expand well into the future, as it is still the early innings of the wireless revolution.However, there is a tremendous amount of hype surrounding mobile wireless communications. Upon close examination, there remain substantial technical and financial hurdles that must be cleared. While these issues will ultimately be solved, it will take longer than many believe and there will be plenty of casualties along the way.When an industry has the size and growth trajectory of mobile wireless communications, one would expect the major players to be very profitable. However, due to challenging structural issues, many segments of the industry are unprofitable. The structural issues in mobile wireless communications may well lead to a profitless prosperity, where growth rates are high, but acceptable financial returns are hard to come by.This book seeks to provide the business professional,investor, or curious soul a clear and concise explanation of the mobile wireless communications industry and its features, supported by facts and figures.
