Abstract

The effectiveness of the ongoing standardization of Open System Interconnection (OSI) much relies on the formal specification of the related protocols and services; the Lotos language was developed to produce formal specifications of such OSI standards. The design of these complex specifications can follow a variety of approaches and therefore the need of pointing out some design principles arises. In this paper an approach to structuring formal specification of OSI services in Lotos is proposed. The approach is based on the lessons gained by means of an original application of Lotos to the specification of the ISO Presentation service.
