The value of automatic restructurers in the maintenance phase of the software life cycle will be discussed. Our discussions will centre on programs written in COBOL but the arguments are applicable to programs written in other languages. Some of the dangers of automatically restructuring a program are highlighted and the use of interactive restructurers to overcome these dangers are considered.
