Abstract

General results about the numerical stability of the spline collocation method for Volterra integral equations are developed in the case of smooth polynomial splines. Besides stability conditions for linear and quadratic splines, quantitative results are presented concerning the instability of cubic and higher order splines. Numerical tests supporting the theoretical results are also presented concerning the instability of cubic and higher order splines.
