Abstract

This paper describes the architectural principles and drivers behind the Internet protocol suite and identifies the fundamental differences when compared to the historical telco approach. The major Internet protocol enhancements of multicast routeing and quality of service (QoS) are then described and briefly compared to the related and developing solutions in the ITU and ATM forum. Finally, two major interworking scenarios are discussed for the Internet. The first outlines some of the fundamental architectural issues being addressed for the development of ATM within the internetworking paradigm. The second considers opportunities for the sharing of intelligence and data with the intelligent network.
