Abstract

This paper describes the role of operations and the typical environment found at an IP operations centre. The information developed in this paper is taken from real situations, implementations and initiatives. This experience arose out of the creation of the BT Internet Operations Centre (BT IOC). Based on operational experience developed over several years, the functions and roles used in a successful operations environment are described, as are those used in real-time and elapsed-time tasks that pertain to the operations functions. Firstly, the generic workflow and functions are described, followed by a summary of the roles and responsibilities of a network operations team. The individual teams' roles are described in detail together with a description of the tools used to maintain and improve an operation. The final part of the paper describes the people attributes and values that are required to maintain a network operation.
