Abstract

This paper discusses the design methodology that has been used during the planning and growth of many large IP-based networks such as BT's and Concert's IP backbones. The paper focuses specifically on the scaling issues that must be considered in the design of Internet networks to ensure that the network is stable and can grow to match the rapidly increasing scale and traffic on the Internet. Specifically highlighted as key design areas to meet scaling and stability criteria are domain structure, hierarchical design, node design and routeing design.
