Abstract

The 1980s gave birth to a dream of a global superhighway that would eventually offer multigigabits per second to each customer. A very wide range of broadband services was invented that would make use of this bandwidth. However, such high-speed networks have never been deployed anywhere in the world. Some of the markets originally envisaged either no longer exist or have been open to very strong competition from other platforms, while a few new applications have arisen. This paper considers what is left of the old services and introduces some of the new ones, looking at the performance implications surrounding future service delivery.
