Abstract

When reasoning about complex domains, whereinformation available is usually only partial, nonmonotonic reasoning can be an important tool. Oneof the formalisms introduced in this area is Reiter‘sDefault Logic (1980). A characteristic of thisformalism is that the applicability of default(inference) rules can only be verified in the futureof the reasoning process. We describe aninterpretation of default logic in temporal epistemiclogic which makes this characteristic explicit. It isshown that this interpretation yields a semantics fordefault logic based on temporal epistemic models. Acomparison between the various semantics for defaultlogic will show the differences and similarities ofthese approaches and ours.
