Abstract

In this article, we propose a database-internalrepresentation for SGML-/HyTime-documents based on object-orienteddatabase technology with the following features: documents of arbitrarytype can be administered. The semantics of architectural forms isreflected by means of methods that are part of the database schema andby the database-internal representation of HyTime-specificcharacteristics. The framework includes mechanisms to ensureconformance of documents to the HyTime standard. Measures for improvedperformance of HyTime operations are also described. Thedatabase-internal representation of documents is a hybrid between acompletely structured and a flat representation. Namely, the structuredrepresentation is better to support the HyTime semantics, andmodifications of document components. On the other hand, mostoperations are faster for the flat representation, as will be shown.
