The HySCharts environment (Hyperdocument System Basedon StateCharts) supports the formal specification of hyperdocumentsusing a novel formalism called HMBS (Hyperdocument Model Basedon Statecharts). This paper presents the HySCharts systemarchitecture, with emphasis on its underlying model and on thefunctionality of its authoring and browsing modules. HMBS is astatechart-based, navigation-oriented model for hyperdocumentspecification that uses the structure and execution semantics ofstatecharts to specify both the structural organization and thebrowsing semantics of a hyperdocument. The formal definition of HMBSand its associated browsing semantics are introduced. A discussionof the system and its capabilities, as supported by the model, isalso provided.
