Abstract

Explanations of fuzzy sets usually start out with some example like the statement "John is tall". The statement conveys some information to us, but there is an element of uncertainty and no measurement of John's height is provided. It implies some set of heights greater than perhaps 5 feet 11 inches that would normally be considered tall, but there is not even any clear dividing line between "tall", "medium", and "short". Much human knowledge and thinking is like that. Fuzzy sets and systems are a rather ponderous attempt to provide a well-defined mathematical and logical procedure for dealing with such information. In general they appeal to people interested in such areas as artificial intelligence and linguistics.
