Abstract

From the Publisher:Raise is an acronym for Rigorous Approach to Industrial Software Engineering. The Raise Development Method defines a wide range of techniques for carrying out particular development steps, and assumes some familiarity with RAISE Specification Language (RSL). RAISE takes seriously the word "industrial". This method is intended for use on real developments, not just toy examples. RSL was described in a previous volume in this series, and the tools have been commercially available for some time. In this volume the RAISE method is described. Key features include a description of the role of formal techniques in software development; a tutorial illustrating specification and development of applicative and imperative, sequential and concurrent software; coverage of techniques relating to formal development, justification and translation into programming language; and valuable exercises and examples. With a firm commitment to practical applications of the RAISE method in industry, this book will be invaluable for professional software engineers and developers. RSL, together with its associated development method and support tools, was initially developed in the collaborative RAISE ESPRIT project (1985-90) by companies in Denmark and England. This technology is currently being used and further developed by companies in six European countries in the LaCoS ESPRIT project (1990-95). Other companies and academic institutions in Europe and North America are also starting to use and teach RSL.
