Abstract

This paper evaluates the trade-off between data compression andvisual quality in the context of the end-to-endcontinuous-target/discrete-processing/continuous-display multiresolution imaging model. It extends the traditional design and assessment ofoptimal filter banks and lossless decomposition quantization toinclude the effects of acquisition, reassembly and display. It comparesthe performance of the new design technique to the prevalent reductionmetrics in terms of the loss of relevant information and its correspondingvisual effects on resulting image presentation.
