Abstract

Adaptive antenna technology is now regarded as one ofthe key system components in future generationcellular networks. This paper considers theperformance of a DS-CDMA system which employs adaptiveantennas at the base station sites of both microcelland mixed micro/umbrella cell operationalenvironments. A microcellular ray tracing propagationtool has been employed in order to ascertain sitespecific propagation data. Results for a typical smallcell environment highlight both the propagationcharacteristics and the behaviour of the adaptiveantenna, as well as the sensitivity of the system uponparameters such as the mutual coupling effect. Thiswork does not assume idealised propagation conditionsor antenna radiation patterns for the small cellanalysis. In summary, the results indicate thatmicrocellular base stations employing adaptive antennasignal processing can offer a significant capacityenhancement and improved channel characteristics whencompared with their omnidirectional counterparts. Inaddition, it is shown that umbrella cells overlayingmicrocells within the same RF bandwidth allocation, donot impact upon system capacity providing thatadaptive antenna technology is employed at theumbrella cell site.
