Spectrum limitations are oftena deterrent for swift growth of cellularradio systems. Therefore, differenttechnologies have been explored to enhancethe Radio Frequency (RF) capacity as wellas to improve the communication quality.Recent technologies suggest the use ofDiscontinuous Transmission (DTX) as a meanto achieve these goals. In this paper, we analyze andquantify the performance improvement whichresult from implementing DTX inmicrocellular systems. The performance criteria is chosento be the outage probability of de signalto interference ratio. Closed formexpressions are derived for outageprobabilities for systems usingdiscontinuous transmission. Results areobtained for generalizedNakagami(n)/Nakagami(m) channels as wellas for Ricean/Nakagami(m) environments. Moreover, since DTX effectiveness dependon voice patterns, modified expressionsare developed for average outageprobabilities which take intoconsideration different voice activityfactors.
