Abstract

The paper deals with dual diversityreception of M-ary differential phase-shift keyingmodulated signals in the presence of additive whiteGaussian noise and Nakagami-distributed slow andnonselective fading. The performance of a switcheddiversity system is analysed and compared to that ofthe predetection selection diversity combining scheme. The general case of correlated diversity branches isconsidered, without restrictions on the fadingseverity parameter. Average symbol error rate formulasare analytically derived in terms of integralexpressions that can be easily computed via numericalintegration routines. Moreover, the numericalevaluation of the optimum switching threshold iscarried out and the influence of the fading severityparameter, the branch correlation, and the cardinalityof the symbol alphabet is analysed. Finally, threefixed switching threshold strategies that allow toobtain a satisfactory diversity gain are considered.
