Abstract

Metacat is a flexible, schema-independent XML-enabled database intended to be used for metadata storage, query, and access as part of a national, distributed network of ecological research sites.Metacat allows users to store, query, and retrieve XML documents with arbitrary schemas in SQL-compliant relational database systems, and provides a portable mechanism for replication across Metacat instances.Keywords: metadata; ecology; bioinformatics; ecoinformatics; XML; distributed databases; catalog
