The characteristics of complex distributed systems and the applications that run on them justify the need for software tools to represent, optimize, and control system performance. The authors focus on two contemporary examples of complex distributed computing systems-one for transaction processing and one for control. They then present an overview of online monitoring and dynamic-analysis tools that support the design and test of such systems. Two techniques that can help increase the functionality and usability of these tools are the integration of domain-specific and COTS tools and the rapid prototyping of application-specific tools. To provide a specific example of integration and rapid prototyping, the authors describe an integrated tool environment that they've targeted at the types of complex systems addressed in this article.
