New standards may help bridge the rapidly growing communities of the Internet and facsimile machine users. One of these is the Internet standard proposed in July 1992 which provides enhanced capabilities for e-mail. This new standard, Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME), lets users exchange multiple-media mail messages over the Internet. The fax-MIME gateway takes advantage of these developments to offer fax services to Internet users and Internet services to multimedia fax users.
