Multimedia in the process control industry has broad scope in terms of incorporating diverse imaging sensors as well as using multimedia data for visualizing, monitoring, and controlling time- critical processes. Our research has shown that a distributed architecture based on a client-server model that operates on multimedia data, together with specialized image processing hardware and a number of commercial products can be very effective in monitoring and controlling a film coating process.
