This paper presents the outcomes of five years of investigations into the interaction between multimedia telecommunications services and broadband networks including the results of experiments on networks of national scale. The experiments demonstrate how the high-level architectural primitives allow rapid creation of multi-point, multi-media applications. We present objective performance measurements and subjective useability results for the applications. The results were derived from a number of private and public trials on Ethernet, a heterogenous multimedia network, a national DQDB network (Fastpac) and an experimental ATM network. We conclude that limited multimedia telecommunications systems and services with intuitive user interfaces can be rapidly constructed with current technologies.
