The incorporation of multimedia data types is increasingly becoming a requirement in spatial information systems (SIS). Pictures, sounds, animated sequences and unstructured text are examples of data which may form an integral part of geographically located entities in information systems. We provide an overview of the application domain and consider issues and problems pertinent to the inclusion of multimedia capabilities in spatial information systems. We introduce an example ecological application with extensive multimedia requirements to illustrate how multimedia data may be integrated with spatial information systems in a generic, application-independent manner. The problem is considered by describing how multimedia capabilities have been incorporated into a spatial information system based on the geo-relational model and then discussing the use of an object-oriented model to enable a better integration of SIS and multimedia data.Contact the author at Computing Laboratory, University of Kent at Canterbury, Canterbury, Kent, CT2 7NF, UK, e-mail: Z.Kemp@ukc.ac.u
