In this article, we study the allocation of multimedia programs in certain distributed multimedia-on-demand systems that provide programs at will to users from a number of geographically scattered multimedia servers. Each user is associated with one of the servers (the local server), but can still access transparently any program located at any server. We formulate the problem and introduce models and terminology for hierarchical and mesh-configured distribution networks. In our study, we consider the user demand for the programs, the storage limitation of the multimedia servers, and the cost incurred for storing and transporting the various programs. For some specific systems, we propose solutions regarding the number of copies of programs and their storage location that minimizes the communication cost.
