Abstract

This paper addresses the compression and transmission issues related to the color cryosection images of the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project. These images total about 235 GBytes of data and thereby challenge conventional methods of organization, storage, retrieval, transmission, and dissemination. The compression effort includes both lossless and lossy methods, both designed to take advantage of the characteristics of the advanced TCP approaches as well as a multisocket technique developed in house.
