The authors introduce an interactive multimedia presentation development system. They look at a presentation from two views: the control view and the knowledge inheritance view. Control of a presentation is based on message-passing among presentation windows, while common information and knowledge is inherited and shared by presentation windows via an inference system. While a user views a presentation, the underlying inference system is learning from his/her responses. This mechanism allows the presentation to be adjusted according to the audience's background and knowledge, making the resulting presentation dynamically customizable. An object-oriented multimedia database permits organization of resources and presentations, and a database browser facilitates reuse of objects in the database. The system is implemented under MS Windows 95 and can be used for general purpose presentations or in more specialized areas such as education, training, or product demonstration.
