We describe functionality that should be used to determine the suitability of an object database management system for the development of multimedia applications. Support at all levels of hardware and software are discussed, as even the most ideal database software cannot operate independently of operating systems, networks, and hardware. A review of the multimedia support provided by current commercial and research object database management systems is also included.
