Abstract

This paper specifies a complete multimedia messaging system called MHEGAM (MHEG-1 Advanced Mail). MHEGAM enables the creation, the exchange, and the restitution of multimedia messages expressing spatial and temporal synchronization among their components (body parts). The MHEG-1 standard is used in the specification of those messages and this paper gives an overview of this standard. The characteristics of MHEGAM are then described. In particular, this paper explains how a MHEG object can be included in a message and also how unknown media types are processed using alternative body parts. MHEGAM can be based on X.420 or MIME, the two standard messaging systems. X.420 and MIME are briefly described and compared. This paper then presents the multimedia extensions of the two systems called MHEGAM-X.420 and MHEGAM-MIME. The multimedia message format and the components of the architecture are presented for both systems.
