Abstract

Current communication systems use complex multiplexing techniques to maximize total bandwidth for users. With more high-bandwidth services becoming available, particularly on the Internet, even more sophisticated coding and modulation techniques are needed. We have developed a system based on advanced signal processing to meet such needs. The time-frequency-division multiplexing scheme for high-bandwidth communications we have developed uses smooth time-frequency divisions for a multiple-access fiber-optic network. As this article will show, our modulation scheme makes much better use of the time-frequency plane, while drastically reducing timing jitter and the deleterious effects of dispersion through proper use of orthogonal waveforms.
