This paper describes the ACEDB database, an object-oriented database system that has been designed from the ground up to represent genomes and other complex biological data. It introduces readers to the ACEDB data model and its built-in methods for handling sequence information. It then describes the ACEDB query languages and shows how application programmers can use the ACEDB APIs to fetch, examine, and modify data maintained in ACEDB databases.
