Abstract

Celtic knotwork is a beautiful form of ornament. Creating a pleasing design is a matter of aesthetics, but the mechanics of the process fit naturally into the framework of a computer program. I describe Bain's construction method (1951), explain how to write a program to implement it, discuss some ways to improve the output, and show some results. My approach is to use the computer to develop a sketch, which then serves as the basis for a hand drawing
