Information appliances are the devices that permit us to take computing off the desktop and into our everyday world. They simplify the process of information access and are usually dedicated to a small number of tasks that they perform very well. Compare this to the complex graphical user-interfaces of general-purpose computers. Often portable, the devices usually connect wirelessly to the rest of our computing environment and may not even have a graphical component of their own. However, some, such as a set-top box, need a plumbed network connection. We're only starting to understand the applications of these devices and how interactive computing will change because of them. This survey provides an overview of the field today and predicts where it will lead in the near future.
