Abstract

The growth of digital TV in UK homes has been much more rapid than the penetration of the Internet which has itself grown at a phenomenal rate. The digital services started on 1 October 1998 with satellite broadcasting and was followed on 15 November 1998 by terrestrial broadcasting and more recently by cable services. By mid-2000, only about one and a half years after the start of services, 5 million (or about 20 percent) of UK homes had digital TV. Of these, 4 million had satellite services, 750,000 had terrestrial services, and the had rest cable. This figure of 5 million homes with digital TV approaches the 25 percent of homes that now have Internet access, which of course started much earlier.
