Abstract

Suppliers of computers and networking products face a considerable challenge in verifying the functionality of their equipment, both when manufactured and after installation. This problem is exacerbated for the customer by the fact that, increasingly, such equipment is used as part of a heterogeneous network constructed of diverse products purchased from a wide range of suppliers. The ISO/ITU test management protocol described in this article is designed to alleviate this problem by standardizing the interface between testing and diagnostic tools and the networked computer and/or communications systems under test. Through this interface, tests can be initiated, controlled, and observed in a uniform manner, independent of the design or supplier of the systems from which the network is constructed.
