Increasing product complexities combined with very short time-to-market scenarios requires the ability to consider both the customer's flexible requirements and the rigid constraints imposed by the design and the manufacturing processes very early in the design cycle. These preliminary tasks, which include functional design, partitioning, resource allocation, architecture selection and verification, communication and interface design, determine over 70% of the final product design, manufacturing and maintenance costs. We propose that conceptual prototyping, a systematic process that utilizes model-based architectural synthesis and verification, ensures that the early design is efficient, economic and meets customer requirements in addition to the capability for rapid upgrade of legacy systems. We demonstrate how complex embedded digital systems can be conceptually prototyped in a matter of weeks using a scalable, plug-and-play, model year design methodology proposed as part of DARPA's RASSP program.
