Abstract

Motion-compensated transform coding is proposed for video compression in systems for the US terrestrial broadcast of high-definition television (HDTV). A noncritical overview of the video coding techniques used in the four proposed digital HDTV systems, that provides basic descriptions of the discrete cosine transform, motion estimation and compensation, adaptive quantization, variable-length coding, and compressed video data formatting is presented.
