The term user-interface management system (UIMS) is used to refer to a broad category of interface-development systems supporting interface development during all life-cycle phases. The evolution of UIMSs is presented, focusing on distinguishing characteristics that have emerged to delineate the significant differences in various types of UIMSs. Example systems that typify each generation are briefly described. The relationships (or lack thereof) of each generation to software engineering are explored.
