Abstract

This article is a report on an innovative retraining program designed to take a surplus of engineers from traditional areas at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Marietta, Georgia, and retrain them through a combination of coursework at Southern Polytechnic State University and a practicum back at the company into software engineers. The article addresses the planning and implementation phases as well as the results to date and recommendations for others considering such partnerships. The authors also present insights into the curriculum, its evolution, and issues regarding how such instruction can be made more effective.
