The Image Understanding Environment project is a five-year program, sponsored by ARPA, to develop a common software environment for the development of algorithms and application systems. This article reviews the history of the project and provides an overview of the IUE design. The ultimate goal of the project is to provide the basic data structures and algorithms required to implement IU research systems and application prototypes.
