Abstract

Our goal is to show how resource balancing can be used as a basic model for configuring modular systems. We begin by trying to convey an intuitive understanding of the basic idea of the resource model and its application to configuring. We then describe the major aspects of the full resource model for capturing the real-life behavior of technical systems, and how it goes beyond the oversimplified basic model. In this, we distinguish between domain knowledge and control knowledge. We then relate the benefits of the resource model for knowledge acquisition and maintenance, and argue that it lacks the bottlenecks found in other approaches. Taking a step back, we expand on why we consider resource balancing an atypical constraint-solving problem, and explain why our approach is successful. We conclude with some remarks on suitable application areas. Throughout we use examples related to programmable logic control.
