Abstract

Onboard science processing opportunities can transform how spacecraft collect and use scientific data. The authors discuss three prototype software systems that tackle well-identified scientific calculations in a spaceborne setting. The proposed paradigm will enable scientists to direct mission activities without the assistance of a ground sequencing team; allow robust capture and redirection when making discoveries at the target body; accommodate the realities of limited communication links; and ensure the return of quality science products from missions.
