Abstract

In this paper, we present an image-adaptive joint photographers expert group encoding algorithm that incorporates global thresholding based on the statistical information of the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient distributions. These statistics are also used to construct rate/distortion-specific quantization tables with nearly optimal tradeoffs. Results on natural and SPOT images demonstrate that the proposed thresholding technique improves the reconstructed image quality compared to that provided by other DCT image coding schemes without thresholding.
