Abstract

We highlight some of the recent methods developed by the Team for Advanced Flow Simulation and Modeling for computer modeling of parachute systems. Successful modeling of parachute systems requires that we address a number of computational challenges including unsteady flows, computational domains with changing shapes, and strong coupling between the airflow around a parachute and the dynamics of the parachute structure. Among the methods we developed to address these challenges are the Deforming-Spatial-Domain/Stabilized Space-Time (DSD/SST) formulation and various advanced mesh update methods. We also highlight several parachute simulations and test computations.
