Abstract

Management Information Bases (MIBs) for use with the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) are defined in a language called the Structure of Management Information (SMI). This language, based on an adapted subset of ASN.1 (1988), has been a constant source of confusion for Internet MIB designers, MIB implementors and users of network management products. This paper presents work towards a new SMI, tentatively called SMIng, which addresses some of the shortcomings of the current SMI. We describe the design of an embeddable C library to access SMI definitions as well as some tools using this library.
