Many AI systems define, store, ajid manipulate a user model (UM) by knowledge representation means different or separate from the system's knowledge base (KB). This paper describes a UM strategy in a system for generation of NL explanations. The idea is to track the user's requests and to modify the declarative patterns for information retrieval by actors. This allows for dynamic tailoring of the explanations to the user's previous knowledge.
