Currently two main approaches exist to realize Quality of Services in the Internet. While Integrated Services are based end to end sessions, Differentiated Services focus on traffic aggregates. Additionally, architectures on higher levels like Bandwidth Brokers are developed. All these concepts have their pros and cons and a seamless interaction is desirable but complex because of the heterogeneousness and dynamics of the Internet. To cope with these problems an approach based on Active Networks is proposed. This paper presents an approach of using Active Networking technology to combine the two main resource reservation techniques Integrated and Differentiated Services and describes a prototype implementation for evaluation purposes.
