Searching the World Wide Web for desired information is becoming increasingly challenging with the growing number of web servers and pages. Commonly used search engines often return broken links, out-of-date information, and unrelated pages. This project presents an alternative to these search engines by describing an architecture for a mobile autonomous search agent. MELISSA searches Internet web servers on the user's behalf and reports results back to the user in real-time that are up-to-date and free of broken links. In addition, MELISSA suppresses most unrelated pages by applying Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), a statistical method for extracting and representing meaning in text corpora. An experiment comparing MELISSA to the AltaVista Internet search engine reveals significant improvements in search engine performance.
