Abstract

Our industry is rapidly moving toward integrating components that are delivered in "black boxes" after decades of custom, white-box software development. That alone is not a concern until you couple it with the industry's standard for defect densities. The problem we are having with getting defect densities down to a reasonable size gets magnified for systems that are heavily comprised from acquired software because most of the prevalent quality improvement techniques cannot be applied by the user of the acquired software. Thus independent, third-party certification, that seriously stresses the software product, is absolutely necessary in our software industry if we ever hope to be able to trust generic, acquired software.
