Speech recognition is a common application area for artificial neural networks. Although most of the speech recognition systems are implemented as a complex software running in a conventional computer, nowadays there are commercially available neural chips for speech recognition targeted to embedded applications. A prototype for man-computer interface based on one of these neural chips is shown; the developed circuit controls a computer mouse with speech commands. This voice-activated mouse is 'plug & play', in the sense that it can be directly connected to a mouse port without requiring any special software. The technique proposed can be easily applied to other computer input peripherals, such as keyboards or joysticks.
