Simulation is used to investigate the quality of service that a high-speed DQDB metropolitan area network can provide in a mixed-traffic scenario where connection-oriented video services coexist with connectionless data services. The basic DQDB access protocol as well as two of its options, are considered in a network with 1 Gbit/s data rate, and 5 km spall. The performance metrics used for the quality of service assessment are the throughput, the average and variance of the message delay. Results are presented considering the whole network, as well as individual nodes, so that protocol fairness issues can be discussed.
